Cognitive ability, financial literacy, and narrow bracketing in time-preference elicitation

چکیده
• In an incentivized experiment relying on the Convex Time Budget protocol, we document substantial heterogeneity in choice-patterns and estimated parameters at individual-level. Cognitive reflection financial literacy are associated with more patient intertemporal choices. choice patterns that suggest violations of narrow bracketing assumption (i.e., allocate entire budget to a single payment-date corner choices as interest rates increase). Thus, cognitive may be potential confounds time-preference elicitation tasks time-dated monetary rewards. We study role ability for inter-temporal decision-making using adapted version Protocol. individual-level: Subjects higher likely make choices, payment-date, increase. At same time, is uncorrelated consistency individual error parameters, suggesting these results not driven by reduction random noise among high respondents. These serve suggestive evidence arbitrage respondents, thereby revealing confound

Narrow Bracketing and Dominated Choices1
An experiment by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) illustrates that people's tendency to evaluate risky decisions separately can lead them to choose combinations of choices that are …rst-order stochastically dominated by other available combinations. We investigate the generality of this e¤ect both theoretically and experimentally. We show that for any decisionmaker who does not have constant-absolut...
متن کاملNarrow Bracketing and Dominated Choices
We consider a decisionmaker who "narrowly brackets", i.e. evaluates her decisions separately. Generalizing an example by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) we show that if the decisionmaker does not have constant-absolute-risk-averse preferences, there exists a simple pair of independent binary decisions where she will make a rstorder stochastically dominated combination of choices. We also character...
متن کاملConstruction of time preference : an investigation of the role of elicitation method in experimental elicitation of time preference
Abstract The idea of preference reversal and construction of preference is not new to literature in decision making. Indeed, several theories have been developed to explain it. (Lichtenstein and Slovic, 2006). The present paper considers heuristics activated in different elicitation procedures applied in time preference research. I show that activation of these rules in correspondence with diff...
متن کاملPreference elicitation and learning
Preferences are fundamental to decision processes, because decision analysts must account for the preferences of the stakeholders who participate in these processes and are impacted by the decision outcomes. To support the elicitation of stakeholder preferences, many models, procedures and methodologies have been proposed. These approaches to preference elicitation and learning will become more...
متن کاملPreference Modeling and Preference Elicitation: An Overview
Handling preferences [16] is important in a number of domains, including recommender systems, computational advertisement, personal cognitive assistants, systems for decision support (for example, in medicine) and robotics. Artificial intelligence has been dealing with preferences for quite some time. In order to get closer to the goal of realizing autonomous agents that can decide and act on b...
